   Test Facilities

Your guarantee of quality and your peace-of-mind are paramount. Each department at M&C is equipped with the test equipment required to ensure full compliance with all relevant test methods and procedures. Furthermore the three main test bays are purpose-built advanced test facilities that ensure the highest level of quality control on each electric motor, generator or alternator manufactured or repaired.

High Voltage Test Bay

Our flagship high Voltage test bay has been custom designed and purpose-built to test your electric rotating equipment. The facilities have been equipped to conduct full mechanical load testing, which allows your motor’s real power factor as well as temperature rise, efficiency, full load current and full load speed to be accurately measured.

Test Bay

This test bay is equipped with the following:

  • Full mechanical direct load testing of AC and DC motors up to 1500 kW and 11000 Volts. Results obtained include: Efficiency, power factor, temperature rise, full load speed, slip, full load current, full load bearing temperature rise, current spectrum analysis, etc.
  • Two separate AC supplies: Variable frequency and variable supply Voltage up to 11000 Volts. This enables us to conduct no load testing of AC motors up to 13MW at a frequency of 50 and 60 Hz.
  • Impulse testing of winding up to 6600 Volts.
  • Surge comparison testing of windings up to 12000 Volts.
  • Tan Delta testing up to 11000 Volts.
  • High Voltage AC pressure up to 20000 Volts.
  • High Voltage DC pressure up to 12000 Volts.
  • Vibration measurements and diagnosis.
  • Separation of losses test.
  • Core and core Watt loss tests.
  • Locked rotor test.
  • El-Cid tests on rotor and stator.
  • Bar to bar and continuity tests.
  • Water-cooled motor testing
  • Flood lubricated and/or water-cooled bearing tests

Marthinusen & Coutts are the leaders in the repair and rewind of high voltage electric motors in Southern Africa. We also offer services such as balancing, testing, installation and quality certifications.

DC Test Bay

Your DC motors are also thoroughly scrutinised in M&C’s DC Test Bay. This test facility is often the final check of the high quality manufacture or repair of a DC motor, DC generator or Traction motor. This test bay is equipped with the following:

  • Full mechanical direct load testing up to 500 kW by using an Eddy Current Dynamometer
  • Three separate DC supplies.
  • Impulse-testing of winding up to 6600 Volts.
  • Surge comparison testing of windings up to 12000 Volts.
  • High Voltage AC pressure up to 20000 Volts.
  • High Voltage DC pressure up to 12000 Volts.
  • Vibration measurements and diagnoses.
  • AC Volts drop test.
  • Polarity test.
  • Drop-testing new armature windings.
  • Ducter test.

Low Voltage and Flameproof Test Bay

Advanced testing is also carried out in the low Voltage and flameproof departments. This test bay is equipped with the following:

  • Full mechanical direct load testing up to 750 kW by using two Water Brake Dynamometers
  • Three separate AC supplies: Variable supply Voltage up to 1000 Volts AC
  • Impulse testing of winding up to 24000 Volts
  • Surge comparison testing of windings up to 24000 Volts
  • High Voltage AC pressure up to 50000 Volts
  • High Voltage DC pressure up to 24000 Volts
  • Vibration measurements and diagnoses

Factory Test Equipment

To ensure your assets are tested thoroughly without compromising your lead-times, the factory is also equipped with the necessary test equipment to carry out in-process quality checks at the workstations. This streamlining has greatly improved the test facilities' efficiency and also helps us to minimise your repair times. The factory is equipped with the following advanced test equipment:

  • Impulse testing of winding up to 24000 Volts. This is done by means of a Baker, two off P&J and two off Risatti surge comparison testers.
  • Surge comparison testing of windings up to 24000 Volts. This is done by means of a Baker, two off P&J and two off Risatti surge comparison testers.
  • High Voltage DC pressure up to 24000 Volts. This is done by means of a Baker, two off P&J and two off Risatti surge comparison testers.
  • El Cid testing of stator cores.
  • El Cid testing of rotor cores.
  • Rotor continuity and bar-to-bar testing.
